RTA applies AI, machine learning to plan better bus routes

by Out and About Mag.

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), has started experimenting with the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies (machine learning algorithms) in plotting out bus routes in Dubai, based on usage throughout the day.

The step aims to save time and effort for all parties.

During a trial period, the RTA experimented on ten routes, where nol card data was used to figure out all-day busy bus stops, stops used during peak hours, and stops rarely used.

By using machine learning algorithms in analysing the captured data, the concerned departments would be able to build up systems and take decisions about removing certain stops, or introducing an express service that skips those stops, while ensuring customer needs are always addressed.

The trial phase resulted in saving time by 13.3 percent in a month.

Considering buses cover nearly 153 million kilometres per year, the technology would save on fuel, and it would reduce carbon emissions. It will also save route planners time and effort, thanks to the automated route-proposal and improvement process.
